Below is a statement from the TEFL Workers’ Union steering committee expressing our solidarity with and support for the recently unionised British Council teachers and staff in Taipai. They can count on our support as they hold the BC’s feet to the flame in collective bargaining. Solidarity!
The TEFL Workers’ Union stands in full solidarity with British Council workers in Taiwan. We wishthem victory in their struggle to achieve union recognition and collective bargaining. We offer all the assistance we can in their fight for a better deal for teachers and other workers employed by the British Council.
Some of us have worked for the British Council in other centres. We have experienced dramatic deteriorations in pay and other contract conditions firsthand. We are
involved in fightbacks in the UK in other language schools also brought on by the cost-of-living crisis. We appreciate the lead being given by BC teachers in Taiwan and the Taiwan Higher Education Union.
Unionisation is the way to go!
